YUAN Wins Gold Medal in Kaggle International AI Competition
YUAN achieved outstanding success by winning the gold medal in the 2025 Kaggle competition “BYU - Locating Bacterial Flagellar Motors 2025,” hosted by Brigham Young University. This accomplishment highlights YUAN’s excellence in the fields of artificial intelligence and biomedical image analysis.
The competition aimed to develop machine learning algorithms capable of automatically identifying bacterial flagellar motor locations in cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) images, supporting researchers in advancing molecular biology, drug development, and synthetic biology. YUAN developed a high-accuracy AI system by integrating multiple lightweight object detection models, striking a balance between speed and precision. The model accurately located flagellar motors from 900 3D tomographic images.
To excel in this challenge, participants were required to process large-scale data, conduct feature engineering, and design innovative and efficient AI models under tight time constraints. YUAN demonstrated exceptional technical depth and problem-solving capabilities throughout the competition.
With a total prize pool of USD 65,000, the competition attracted over 1,000 teams from around the world, making it highly competitive. YUAN’s remarkable performance not only underscores its strength in AI and biomedical image analysis, but also paves the way for further applications and advancements in medical imaging and biotechnology.
